Album Review: Tim Halperin’s “Heart Tells Your Head”

If you like piano-driven alternative-pop with lyrics that tell a story, you need to listen to Tim Halperin. After getting his big start as a Top 24 semifinalist on Season 10 of American Idol, Tim has been constantly on-the-go with his career, making great music as frequently as I struggle to wake up and get out of bed in the mornings. His sincere songwriting coupled with his smooth and soulful voice has made him one talented singer/songwriter to watch, and his latest album is a testament to that fact.

Heart Tells Your Head is Tim’s sophomore independent release (a follow-up to his post-Idol effort, Rise and Fall), and features what the musician considers to be a collection of his best songs yet. Upon first listen, it became clear that his writing has matured and progressed into material that is even more personal and meaningful as ever.

Album Review: Elise Testone’s “In This Life”

As a contestant on Season 11 of American Idol, Elise Testone covered artists like Adele, Al Green, Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Jimi Hendrix (her final performance of “Bold as Love” is highly underrated – I urge you to take a listen), and a mix of those eclectic sounds are interwoven all throughout her debut album, In This Life, which encompasses a hybrid of genres, including rock, soul, blues, jazz, funk, pop, Americana, and country.

The independent Charleston singer-songwriter, who plays the roles of singer, writer, and producer, was heavily involved in every step of the process of her solo project, injecting her own style into everything related to its creative and musical direction. In This Life is a reflective culmination of her years of personal experiences and emotions, and those letdowns faced and lessons learned in love and in life are recorded within the collection of songs. In turning those struggles and hardships into artwork through her words and sounds, Elise hopes to connect with listeners who can relate to those situations depicted in her songs and help them find strength and positivity through the power of music.

Album Review: Megan Joy’s “Free To Fly”

Megan Joy is a self-professed lover of love, dreams, and songs. Her second independent release, Free to Fly, is a collection of her songs on love and dreams. Like Megan’s self-titled debut EP (which was funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign), this album is full of infectious tunes and sweet melodies that with twinkle and sparkle with throwback sounds, fun grooves, and her unique jazzy pop sound.
