Girls Rule American Idol Season 12!

Every year, American Idol proclaims that it’s a girl’s year to win, and every year, I’m left feeling disappointed as we watch the female contestants drop one by one (Seasons 9 and 10), and witness a girl falling just short of the title at the grand finale (Seasons 9, 10, AND 11). However, it seems as if the tides have finally turned in Season 12.

For the first time in what feels like forever, the Top 5 girls have remained in tact in the Top 8 of the competition. Even better, three of those girls were named the Top 3 vote-getters during Top 10 week! With this resurgence of recognition and support for female talent, can the show finally find its first girl winner since Season 6’s Jordin Sparks in 2007? I believe so!

Just look at and listen to these five fantastic female contenders – Amber Holcomb, Angie Miller, Candice Glover, Janelle Arthur, and Kree Harrison

Highlights from the 2013 Grammy Awards

2012 was a strong year for music. Promising newcomers (Ed Sheeran, Hunter Hayes) emerged on the scene as alternative artists (fun., Gotye) and fabulous females (Rihanna, P!nk, Kelly Clarkson) ruled the airwaves. The 55th annual Grammy Awards recognized and rewarded the musicians whose albums and singles resonated with fans in an impactful way. Unlike Adele’s remarkable six trophies sweep during last year‘s ceremony, there was no clear frontrunner in terms of 2013′s award recipients. This year’s Grammys honoured artists and bands from a variety of genres, which was also evident from the line-up of the evening’s live performances.

Here are five of my favourite award recipients and/or moments from this phenomenal celebration of music:

There Is Only One Tree Hill

It’s the oldest story in the world. One day, you’re seventeen and planning for ‘some day’, and then quietly and without you ever really noticing, ‘some day’ is today. And then ‘some day’ is yesterday. And this is your life.

In English 10, we were asked to read our favourite poem or song to the rest of the class. One of my classmates recited the lyrics to a song called “I Don’t Want To Be” by a singer named Gavin DeGraw. It was the theme song of a show she liked called One Tree Hill. As a teenager who was struggling to figure out who I was amidst the pressures of people telling me who I was supposed to be, the song’s message of finding the courage to just be you resonated with me.

Out of curiosity, I decided to check out One Tree Hill and see what it was all about, and from that day forward, I was hooked.

Highlights from the 2012 Grammy Awards

As host LL Cool J said at the opening of the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, the night was about something truly universal and healing – music. Devastated by the passing of Whitney Houston (to whom this year’s ceremony is dedicated to), the music community paid their respects to the late, great vocalist by letting the beat go on. The music-makers celebrated this past year by recognizing the achievements of their fellow artists and by creating some of the finest and most memorable Grammy moments in the show’s history.

These were some of my favourite moments…

Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler on CMT Crossroads

She’s a little bit country, he’s a little bit rock and roll. Together, they make crazy good music!

Carrie Underwood and Steven Tyler are the latest musicians to team up for CMT Crossroads, a program that pairs country artists with stars from a different genre. Some of my favourite duos that resulted from Crossroads include Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson; and John Mayer with Keith Urban and Brad Paisley.

I thought pairing Carrie up with Steven again (they performed “Undo It / Walk This Way” during last year’s ACM Awards) was a really cool idea because they seem to have so much fun on stage together. Their setlist consisted of “Sweet Emotion / Love in an Elevator”, “Before He Cheats”, “Cryin'”, “Born to Be Wild”, and my favourite, an emotionally-charged mash-up of Carrie’s “Just a Dream” and Aerosmith’s “Dream On”.

I really hope that a duet between Carrie and Steven is in the works because I can’t get enough of this dynamic duo!
