Life Lessons Learned From… Introversion

In Susan Cain‘s TED Talk, she advocates for those people who are often not heard from – the introverts.

In a culture where the personality traits of being social and outgoing are prized above all else, it can be difficult, even shameful, to proudly identity oneself as an introvert. But, as Cain passionately argues in The Power of Introverts, introverts bring their own extraordinary talents and unique abilities to the world, and should be encouraged and honoured as such.

DeAndre Brackensick’s “Her Crazy”

Since his standout stint on the American Idol Live! Tour last summer, Season 11’s DeAndre Brackensick signed with the independent label, Truth Records, and now, has just released his first single! In the music video for “Her Crazy”, the unique-voiced DeAndre sings about his infatuation with a girl who is unpredictable and risque as he wanders along the beach and through a wild party. This laid back tune with a groovy reggae vibe is the perfect jam to get you in the summertime mood!

Kelly Clarkson’s “People Like Us”

The award-winning, top-selling, international superstar of an Idol Queen, Kelly Clarkson was glorious and spunky as she performed her latest single, “People Like Us” (in the form of a glowing and groovy rave complete with glowsticks and neon colour splashes) on American Idol.

People Like Us”, the new single from award-winning, top-selling, international superstar, and original American Idol Kelly Clarkson’s first Greatest Hits album, is an energizing and encouraging anthem for unity and equality.

The music video is set in a lab where a group of monochromatic scientists are examining a technicolour girl who is starkly out-of-place in their black-and-white world. A heroic reveal sees Kelly, in disguise as one of the lab scientists, coming to the girl’s rescue by helping her escape from the imprisonment of colourless conformity and join her group of fellow misfits in a land of diversity.

Kelly has gone on record to say that this fist-pumping empowerment anthem was her most favourite song that she has ever recorded, and it’s easy to see why.

She is singing for all of us – for those who feel rejected, alone, scared, or numb, for the “misfits living in a world on fire”. We are all fighters, and when life gets tough and unfair, we must hold on and not give up, because the time for change is just around the corner.

As the song says, we are all united in our uniqueness, so we should take a stand for our right to dare to be different – together.

Kelly has made it a mission throughout her musical career to inspire others to stay strong and fulfill their dreams, and I’d say that she’s doing a pretty dang good job of it. Sing on, Kelly!

People like us we’ve gotta stick together
Keep your head up, nothing lasts forever
Here’s to the damned, to the lost and forgotten
It’s hard to get high when you’re living on the bottom

Candice Glover Slays “Lovesong” On American Idol

Let us accept Candice Glover for who she really is – a superstar!

This week, the Top 6 on American Idol were invited to sing a song they wish they had written, which allowed for the contestants to show the world who they are as artists.

Accepting the challenge, Miss Candice, who has been the most consistent performer to date, completely pulverized the night with a powerful and passionate performance of The Cure’s “Lovesong” (which was also covered by Adele).

It was captivating, exquisite, and best of all, a showcase of Candice’s uniquely mature musicianship and inventively jazzy artistry. Her rendition made me cry and rewarded her with standing ovations from the entire studio audience (you could feel the energy from the television set – amazing!) “Lovesong” was the first true moment of this season and one of the best performances across all of the seasons (and so deserving of Mariah Carey’s glitterbomb blessing!).

Keep on slaying, Candice!

Joshua Ledet Brings Memphis Soul to the White House

On April 9th, the standing ovational Joshua Ledet sang his passionate rendition of Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman” (one of his many highlights from Season 11 of American Idol) for PBS’s musical tribute to Memphis Soul at the White House. He had the entire audience on their feet – including President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

Every time I watch Joshua perform, I am blown away by his phenomenal talent. His voice is one of the few that can move me to tears and inspire to me to not only rise up and give him a deserved standing O, but to get up and do something just as amazing with my own life. I think that’s a truly special gift for a musician to have!
