Phillip Phillips’ “Gone Gone Gone”

One song has the power to completely change your life; that statement certainly rings true for the current American Idol winner, Phillip Phillips!

His success story owes a huge thanks to his quadruple-platinum selling coronation single, “Home“, which is now the best selling song by an Idol alum EVER.

The singer-songwriter has another hit on his hands with “Gone, Gone, Gone“, a moving song about standing by the ones you love through thick and thin.

The second single was selected as the send-off song for the eliminated contestants on Season 12 of Idol; Phillips’ recently gave a live performance of the song on the Top 10 Results show.

With relatable lyrics and an appealing Americana-folk sound, Phillips’ debut album, The World From The Side Of The Moon (available on iTunes), has established the musician’s artistic identity as one that speaks to the authenticity of the human experience.

Your hope dangling by a string
I’ll share in your suffering
To make you well, to make you well…

Girls Rule American Idol Season 12!

Every year, American Idol proclaims that it’s a girl’s year to win, and every year, I’m left feeling disappointed as we watch the female contestants drop one by one (Seasons 9 and 10), and witness a girl falling just short of the title at the grand finale (Seasons 9, 10, AND 11). However, it seems as if the tides have finally turned in Season 12.

For the first time in what feels like forever, the Top 5 girls have remained in tact in the Top 8 of the competition. Even better, three of those girls were named the Top 3 vote-getters during Top 10 week! With this resurgence of recognition and support for female talent, can the show finally find its first girl winner since Season 6’s Jordin Sparks in 2007? I believe so!

Just look at and listen to these five fantastic female contenders – Amber Holcomb, Angie Miller, Candice Glover, Janelle Arthur, and Kree Harrison

Life Lessons Learned From… Momentum

The theme of this year’s YWiB SFU International Women’s Day Conference was ‘Gaining Momentum’, which I found to be optimal since that is exactly what I will be focusing on in the next life phase I’m heading towards! There was a poster board in the lobby where all of the attendees could post paper butterflies containing their answers to where they will draw their momentum from. For me, I said I will gain momentum by seeing the beauty in life, singing my song, and dreaming big!

The speakers included international philanthropists, a digital entrepreneur, a government minister, an entertainment host, and more. They offered their insights on themes such as finding and utilizing your passion, leveraging your creativity, connecting with and sustaining a network of enablers and champions, building and supporting a sisterhood, finding opportunity in chaos, overcoming failure and being resilient, paying it forward, valuing your strengths and accomplishments, and being authentic to yourself.

Out of all of the amazing stories I heard that day, the biggest inspirational take-away I got out of the conference came from Tori Holmes (she who rowed across the Atlantic Ocean at the age of 21). She stressed the importance of getting yourself to the starting line of your aspirations, as you must show up for your dreams in order to achieve them. As a wise person once said, “You can never cross the ocean without losing sight of the shore.”

Thanks to this International Women’s Day conference, I’ve gained some more momentum to propel me to the starting line!

The hour of empowerment is upon us.” – Erin Krish

Fashion Hits at the 2013 Oscars

With the Oscars being known for awarding fine talent and achievements in film-making, it is also one of the biggest nights for fashion! Our writers Elizabeth and Tania team up to highlight some of their personal favorites of the best dressed from the 85th Annual Academy Awards, and who takes top honors with the best look of the evening.

The Dolby Theater lit up with the best of Hollywood, as the industry’s elite hit the red carpet this past Sunday wearing top designers and showcasing the latest trends and colors for the season. There were many classic trends that celebrities turned out in with dramatic trains, gun metals, glittery ensembles, flowing pastels with soft tones and hues, tousled hair or goddess curls bordering Veronica Lake, and styles straight out of Downton Abbey. It was a night full of glitz and glamour with a romantic golden era twinkle.
