Music can heal you through the worst heartbreak. If anyone can attest to that truth, it is Lea Michele.

There were a ton of albums released this summer and fall that I haven’t gotten around to commenting on yet, so I bring to you this Music Mix Megapost featuring five standouts that I felt deserved a shoutout before the year comes to an end…
It was a dream come true for Kelly Clarkson when she got her two music mentors, Reba McEntire and Trisha Yearwood, to lend their legendary voices on her Christmas album, Wrapped in Red.
If that wasn’t enough, the country superstars made a special guest appearance on Kelly’s Christmas special (titled Kelly Clarkson’s Cautionary Christmas Music Tale) this week to sing their stunning trio version of “Silent Night“.
It was one of the many showstopping moments of the show, which also included performances of songs from Wrapped in Red, a wardrobe of radiant red dresses, cameos from Whoopi Goldberg, Robin Williams, and William Shatner, and Blake Shelton in a ridiculous elf costume.
Candice Glover‘s newly released song is a stunning sobfest.
“Cried“, the first single (written by Jazmine Sullivan) from the American Idol Season 12 winner’s debut album, Music Speaks (which drops on February 18th, 2014) is a stripped-down, piano-driven, and emotion-filled ballad that places Candice’s captivating and soulful voice front and center.
She sings about the trying experience of giving all of herself to someone she loves, who clearly doesn’t love her back. Tired of concealing her true feelings and holding in her sorrows, she desperately wants to let out the tears wrought by the pain he brought and the heartache he caused.
“Cried” re-introduces Candice as a sophisticated and skilled vocalist who will soon be a force to be reckoned with on the Urban and R&B charts!
This is for every time I let it go
All of the nights that I spent alone
It’s been too hard to hold back the pain
So like a cloud, let it fall like the rain
Yes, I’m gon’ make a sound
Cuz I’m cryin’ out loud

Albums are the musician’s artistic statement to the world as well as the soundtracks to our lives. But is the album nearing the end of its relevancy in today’s music market? According to an article from The Guardian, it is only a matter of time before the album is rendered a relic of music culture. As a whole, CD and digital sales are declining. Of course, there are some recent exceptions (Adele’s 21 and Taylor Swift’s Red, anyone?) but even some of 2013’s most buzzworthy pop artists (Katy Perry’s Prism, Miley Cyrus’ Bangerz) are falling short of expectations for their initial sales numbers, despite massive promotional pushes from their teams. They can roar and break down those walls all they want, but it has become a major challenge for musicians to reach their album sales goals.
All we hear is how illegal file downloading and audio streaming are killing the industry, and how the quality of today’s music is subpar, but really, it all comes down to the fact that the way we listen to music has changed. In order to save the state of the album, we need to look at how our consumption habits have transformed in the twenty-first century (with the rise of digital) and how these factors affect our purchasing decisions…
