Album Review: Matt Giraud’s “Live At River City EP”

Matt Giraud is a cool cat with his distinctively scatty and soulful jazz stylings, which are full of character – even his passionate piano playing has a life of its own. After a memorable run on Season 8 of American Idol followed by years of gigging around North America and the world, Matt finally has new music available for purchase. His first EP, recorded at River City Studios in Grand Rapids, Michigan, features live recordings of five of his original songs (“4AM”, “Brand New Day, “See You In A Little While”, “Baby Girl”, “Stay A While”), along with a special treat (“Georgia On My Mind”) for his fans.

Candice Glover’s “Cried”

Candice Glover‘s newly released song is a stunning sobfest.

Cried“, the first single (written by Jazmine Sullivan) from the American Idol Season 12 winner’s debut album, Music Speaks (which drops on February 18th, 2014) is a stripped-down, piano-driven, and emotion-filled ballad that places Candice’s captivating and soulful voice front and center.

She sings about the trying experience of giving all of herself to someone she loves, who clearly doesn’t love her back. Tired of concealing her true feelings and holding in her sorrows, she desperately wants to let out the tears wrought by the pain he brought and the heartache he caused.

“Cried” re-introduces Candice as a sophisticated and skilled vocalist who will soon be a force to be reckoned with on the Urban and R&B charts!

This is for every time I let it go
All of the nights that I spent alone
It’s been too hard to hold back the pain
So like a cloud, let it fall like the rain
Yes, I’m gon’ make a sound
Cuz I’m cryin’ out loud

Kree Harrison’s Grand Ole Opry Debut

Ask any Country musician what their ultimate goal is, and they’ll say that the grandest achievement out there is to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.

On June 4th, American Idol Season 12 runner-up Kree Harrison saw her lifelong dream come true when she made her debut on the show that made Country music famous.

Keith Urban, who championed Kree on Idol this past season as a judge, introduced her by bestowing tremendous praise for her pure voice and warm spirit. Overwhelmingly speechless and incredibly gracious for the opportunity, Kree treated the Opry audience and listeners to three performances – her first single, “All Cried Out”, a hymn (in honour of her late father), “In The Garden”, and Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through The Night” (accompanied on guitar by Keith Urban).

It was a true full circle for the rising Country artist, who had been envisioning this moment since she was a 10-year old singing prodigy on The Rosie O’Donnell Show. Also worthy of mention, on that same week, Kree joined one of her biggest inspirations, Wynonna, on stage at 3rd & Lindsley, for performances of “Love is Alive” and “Grandpa“.

David Cook’s “Laying Me Low”

David Cook, who has been laying low in Nashville for the last little while to write and record new music, is ready for his comeback!

He launches this new chapter in his music career with his new single, “Laying Me Low“, a song is about an attraction fuelled by temptation and danger, and how hard it is to resist someone who is just no good for you (you get me high, but you’re laying me low).

This recording mixes a bit of a catchy, pop sound (with an energizing stomp clap section in the bridge to boot!) into the emotionally-driven rock grit that is part of his signature style.

For a musician as daring and creative as Cook, “Laying Me Low” presents a different, more evolved sound with successful results.

I remember when you lit my flame
A bitter passion with a pinch of pain
You left me praying for a single drop of rain
But now the fire’s burning out of control
Because I’m never gonna let you go
So bring the gasoline and we can start the show
